“The war increases levels of stress in pregnant women, which leads to an increase in the number of premature births reported”, Herve Verhoosel, spokesperson for global health agency Unitaid said.
He added that babies born prematurely are more likely to develop respiratory, neurological or digestive complications, conditions that often require oxygen for treatment.
It is noted that the agency handed over to Ukraine 220 portable bubble nasal devices, which do not require connection to the power grid and 125 oxygen blender systems.
The device provides non-invasive oxygen ventilation for newborns who have breathing difficulties and significantly increases the chances of survival of babies.
Mixing systems help prevent damage to the eyes, lungs and brain from pure oxygen. According to Mr Verhoosel, to date, 25 referral facilities across Ukraine have received life-saving devices, 17 of which are perinatal centers.
