Bodies were first buried in the grave, on the grounds of the Church of St. Andrew and Pyervozvannoho All Saints, in the first days of the war. There were at least a dozen bodies in body bags, some partially covered with earth.

Most of the bodies have already been buried. This is about 340 victims who died in the battles near Bucha.

The earth on the church grounds appeared to have been recently moved so it is feasible that a larger number of bodies is buried there. Journalists saw people at the site of the mass grave weeping and  looking for the bodies of their dead loved ones.

Bucha has seen some of the heaviest fightings since the war started.
