EU leaders prepare terrorism response


European Union leaders will gather in Brussels on Thursday (12 February) to seek agreement on a co-ordinated response to the terrorist threat from returning jihadist fighters in Syria. Ministers have been laying the groundwork for an EU response. Last Friday (30 January) interior ministers meeting in Riga adopted a joint statement calling for the European Commission to present a ‘European agenda on security’ by April.
The statement also called for Europol’s capabilities to be upgraded, for the powers of officers at Schengen external borders to be increased, and for more cross-border co-operation on fighting illegal trafficking of firearms.
