Volodymyr Yelchenko, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations has stated Ukraine does not abandon an idea of depriving the Russian Federation of its veto power in the UN Security Council, according to an UNIAN correspondent.
”I will not say that it is impossible to achieve. Probably, it can be achieved, but it is a long process … everyone at the UN fears a word `precedent`. It is not that the countries are against depriving Russia of its veto power, but they fear that it might affect them too. The other four permanent Security Council members that have the same veto power will, of course, never agree to this,” Yelchenko said during a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Ministry`s Press Club.
In this regard, the ambassador noted that the U.S., UK, France and China can express their solidarity with Ukraine`s position only in word. At this, Yelchenko has stated there are many countries, apart from Ukraine, supporting a proposal that the present UN Charter should be improved as the document is outdated.
As an example, Yelchenko has mentioned that the UN Charter still designates Germany and Japan as enemy states.
There are also other issues in the document that have to be reviewed, according to Yelchenko, such as the procedure of appointing UN Secretary-General.
The ambassador has acknowledged that there is still a long way to go before it becomes possible to deprive Russia of its veto power.
