Verkhovna Rada passes law on lustration

The Verkhovna Rada, after several unsuccessful attempts and persuasion by Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov, has adopted the law on the cleansing of power.
A total of 231 MPs voted for such a decision on Tuesday, a Ukrinform correspondent reported.
The law defines the legal and organizational principles of the procedure for the cleansing of power from persons defined by this law, with the goal of establishing in society the rule of law, legality, and improving the efficiency of the fight against corruption.
According to the explanatory note to the law, the purpose of this document is to restore confidence in the government and create conditions for the creation of a new system of government in line with European standards.
To achieve this goal, the bill introduces the procedure of respective verification when resolving the question on the possible appointment of a person, as a subject of verification, to a post in government agencies.
In addition, it is envisaged to organize the procedure for checking persons who are subject to inspection, regarding their compliance with the criteria set out in the bill, in order to address the possibility of their further stay in a respective position.
