Variety: Vice News hit with layoffs in U.S., U.K.

Vice Media is cutting 15 news staffers in the U.S. and axed three members of the Vice News U.K. editorial team, while the company also has recently hired nearly 20 employees and plans to open additional news bureaus, according to Variety, a weekly American entertainment trade magazine.
As part of the overhaul of news operations, Josh Tyrangiel — the former Bloomberg chief content officer tapped by Vice last fall to run the daily news show for HBO — will now be overseeing Vice`s news division internationally, Variety wrote.
Politico first reported Tyrangiel`s new appointment.
”The plan in place will expand Vice`s news offerings across digital and TV, continue the recent of wave of newsroom hires, add additional foreign bureaus, and marshal the company`s existing news divisions into one cohesive powerhouse,” a rep for the Brooklyn-based media company said in a statement.
In the U.S., Vice News is letting go producers, writers and editors in New York and L.A. The layoffs come after the company has made a number of new hires, including Madeleine Haeringer as executive producer of the HBO nightly show, Ryan McCarthy as editor-in-chief of Vice News and former New York Times reporter Ravi Somaiya as tech correspondent.
Vice News plans to hire additional editorial employees in the near future, as well as launch new editorial and production bureaus in Hong Kong and San Francisco.
