U.S. suspends diplomatic mission to Turkey in wake of Russian ambassador murder

The United States` diplomatic mission in Turkey has halted normal operations on Tuesday following a deadly attack on the Russian ambassador.

”US Embassy in Ankara and Consulates Istanbul and Adana closed for normal operations today. Visa appointments will be rescheduled,” the Embassy tweeted Tuesday.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the Russian ambassador to Ankara was shot in an attack at an art gallery in the Turkish capital on Monday and the Russian RIA news agency said he had died of wounds sustained.

A joint investigation by Turkish and Russian law enforcers was greenlighted after a telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In a statement late Monday, Putin called the assassination of the Russian diplomat an attempt to disrupt Russian-Turkish ties and a peace process in Syria.

According to Daily Sabah, another gunman has been arrested after he shot in the air outside the U.S. Embassy in Ankara. The man was reportedly attempting to enter the embassy premises.
