US Senator Menendez reminds US State Department to supply arms to Ukraine according to law

US Senator Robert Menendez, Democrat (D-NJ), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, sent the open letter to Secretary of State Kerry urging the administration to begin implementation of the Ukraine Freedom Support Act.
He made the statement on his website, the Ukrinform own correspondent in Washington, D.C. reported.
“The sanctions implemented by the United States and the European Union have had a tangible effect on the Russian economy. Combined with the decrease in global energy markets, the international pressure on the Russian economy has been unprecedented,” the legislator said.
However, he said that “this has not deterred Vladimir Putin, who continues to provide illegitimate and illegal support to separatists in Eastern Ukraine, as evidenced by OSCE and NATO reports cataloging the growing Russian troop and artillery presence in the region.”
Menendez noted in his letter that the administration would be required to report on its plan for increasing military assistance to Ukraine on February 15. “The law authorized the provision of defense articles including anti-tank and anti-armor weapons, crew weapons and ammunition, radar, and communications equipment for the Ukrainian military,” the congressman said. He “strongly urged” the US administration to provide Ukraine “with the weapons it needs to defend itself.”
In addition, the senator said about the need for tougher sanctions against Russia. In this regard, he mentioned, first of all, Rosoboronexport which continues to provide weapons to the Assad regime in Syria. Menendez urged the US government to “impose additional sanctions on this company” and impose sanctions on other Russian defense industry companies that “contribute to instability in Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and Syria.”
According to US Senator Menendez, the international community must respond to attacks perpetrated by the gunmen and Putin who “has willfully ignored commitments made under the Minsk Agreement and clearly signaled his intentions to escalate tensions in Ukraine and across the region.”
