Ukrainian Prosecutor General Lutsenko seeks ways to reconcile prosecutors with anti-graft agency

Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko, who has recently returned from an official trip to Israel, has met with head of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) Artem Sytnyk and head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Bureau (SAP) Nazar Kholodnytsky to discuss an incident between representatives of the Prosecutor General`s Office (PGO) and NABU on August 12.

”Having returned from an official trip, I have heard explanations by Deputy Prosecutor General Yuriy Stoliarchuk and head of the [economic crime investigation] department [Volodymyr] Hutsuliak today about an incident between NABU and PGO personnel, which happened on August 12. Advisor to the PGO, former U.S. Federal Prosecutor and Assistant Attorney [Bohdan] Vitvitsky was present,” Lutsenko wrote on his Facebook page on Wednesday.

On the same day, Lutsenko also met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and chiefs of all law-enforcement agencies.

”I`ve ended the day while meeting with the NABU and SAP heads. The conclusions that we`ve got common goals and shared responsibility have been confirmed. We`ll organize a joint briefing tomorrow [Thursday, August 18],” Lutsenko added.

The incident took place in Kyiv on August 12, when PGO investigators spotted a surveillance post at 7/9 Symona Petliury Street designed to wiretap PGO personnel, Lutsenko`s press secretary Larysa Sargan said then. The investigators tried to penetrate into the secret apartment, which was followed by the arrival of a NABU special task force.

At the same time, the PGO agents detained two NABU engineers who were engaged into the wiretapping. The two employees were brought to the PGO office, where they were kept for 11 hours.

The NABU opened a criminal case against the PGO officers who ”kidnapped” the NABU personnel.
