Ukraine`s ex-Member of Parliament says he confirmed political asylum status

One of the European states has granted political asylum to the People`s Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Oleksandr Onyshchenko, the latter told Espreso TV channel Wednesday.

”My case has been recognized political. The foreign ministry of one of the European states has provided me with a document confirming my status of a political refugee. This means that my family and I are under the protection of the EU,” Onyshchenko said, according to Espreso.tv.

Earlier, on June 15, 2016, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor`s Office in a joint statement stated they had revealed a criminal organization suspected of embezzling over UAH 3 billion of public funds as a result of business activity on contracts signed with PJSC Ukrgazvydobuvannia.

The evidence gathered by investigators claims that the mastermind behind criminal schemes is MP Oleksandr Onyshchenko, whom the Rada on July 5, 2016, stripped of his immunity status as well as voted for his detention. Ahead of the vote, the MP fled the country.
