Ukraine to refuse Russian natural gas purchases, if Gazprom doesn’t set competitive price – Kobolev

Naftogaz buys natural gas from Gazprom under conditions stipulated in “winter package” that are now not competitive with the terms offered by European gas suppliers. A return to old terms will lead to a further decline in Gazprom’s market share in Ukraine.
The press service of Naftogaz reported the statement made by head of the company Andriy Kobolev.
“Last year we purchased almost half the volume of Russian gas less than in 2013. If Gazprom can’t offer us competitive terms, it will lead to a total loss of Ukraine as a market for the company. We will meticulously transport Russian natural gas for the Europeans, but it will be more profitable to buy gas from the European gas market for Ukrainian consumers . In such circumstances the complete elimination of Gazprom from the Ukrainian market is only a matter of time,” Kobolev said.
As a background note, the Ukrainian natural gas market is the largest in Eastern Europe and was formerly the third largest export market for Gazprom in terms of sales and revenue.
