Ukraine Cabinet mulls injecting another UAH 6.6 bln into army, police

The Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Thursday approved with a further elaboration the draft law on changes to the state budget for 2016, providing for an increase in funding defense and security needs by UAH 6.6 billion.

”It is proposed to increase spending for the Ministry of Defense to cover the deficit in funds for the payments to servicemen; to increase spending of the National Police for raising cash benefits, payments to certain police units; as well payments to the servicemen of the State Border Guard Service, the Main Intelligence Department of the Ministry of Defense, and the SBU,” Finance Minister Oleksandr Danylyuk said while presenting the bill.

At the same time, covering the needs of the defense and security sector  is planned at the expense of savings in the fulfillment of debt obligations worth UAH 6.1 billion, reducing low priority spending by UAH 0.4 billion, and debt service savings worth UAH 0.1 billion.

The Cabinet also approved a draft law on the need to finalize it later with the participation of the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the draft state budget for 2017 assumes the increase in the funding of the country`s defense sector by UAH 14.5 billion compared to 2016, up to 5% of GDP.
