U.S. to allocate $2 billion in loan guarantees for Ukraine

The U.S. government has decided to allocate $2 billion of financial assistance to Ukraine for the successful implementation of reforms.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk said this after a meeting with Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas in Kyiv on Tuesday, referring to the statement of the U.S. government, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
“The U.S. is ready to allocate $2 billion to the Ukrainian government,” Yatseniuk said.
This assistance is provided to Ukraine in the framework of the IMF program, using the same scheme as in 2014, he said. According to him, Ukraine should receive $1 billion in the first half of this year and additional $1 billion in the second half of this year, proved that it properly fulfill the IMF program conditions.
He said that the U.S. government had approved Ukraine’s progress in the introduction of reforms, despite the Russian aggression. According to Yatseniuk, the U.S. government noted, in particular, the progress in fight against corruption in the energy sector, the restoration of the financial system, improvement of the business environment and return of financial stability.
According to Reuters, these funds will be provided in the form of loan guarantees. “The United States plans to provide up to $2 billion in loan guarantees to Ukraine this year, the U.S. Treasury said on Tuesday, as part of a broader international package to prevent bankruptcy,” reads the statement.
The U.S. Finance Ministry noted that the guarantees would be contingent on Ukraine’s remaining on track to meet the conditions of its loan program from the International Monetary Fund.
It is also reported that U.S. Treasury Undersecretary Nathan Sheets was to meet with Ukrainian officials, including Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk, National Bank Governor Valeria Hontareva and Finance Minister Natalie Jaresko in Kiev on Tuesday.
