U.S. representative to UN: Zakharchenko expresses Russia’s intentions

The United States believes that the statements of leader of the so-called “DPR” (Donetsk People’s Republic) Oleksandr Zakharchenko express the true intentions of the Russian leadership.
This was stated by U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations Samantha Power at the meeting of the UN Security Council on Monday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
“The separatists he [Zakharchenko] claims to lead are trained and equipped by Russia. So when Zakharchenko brags about seizing territory beyond the Minsk ceasefire line; when he says he is not interested in negotiating; he is not only speaking about the separatists’ intentions, but also about Russia’s intentions,” Samantha Power said.
She also emphasized that the statements of the Donetsk terrorists’ leader posed a problem for Russia because they “are too straightforward.”
Power also explained why Mariupol and Debaltseve were so important to the separatists and the Russian leadership.
“Mariupol is a port city… Controlling the city would be another step toward creating a land bridge to illegally-occupied Crimea. Debaltseve is a strategic rail and road hub… It is no accident that these strategic cities are in Russia’s sights,” U.S. representative noted.
