Turkish President and UN Secretary-General met with Ukrainian President in Ukraine’s west

The President of Ukraine met with Turkish President t Recep Tayyip Erdogan and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Lviv (west of Ukraine) on August 18, 2022. They discussed prospects for ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

“We agreed to continue the coordination of the grain initiative implementation. We also discussed the possible directions of its development, the issue of illegal and forced deportation of Ukrainians, the release of our military personnel and medics from captivity”, the President of Ukraine commented about the meeting with the UN chief.

During the discussion, leaders paid particular attention to the topic of Russia’s nuclear blackmail at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

“This deliberate terror on the part of the aggressor can have global catastrophic consequences for the whole world. Therefore, the UN must ensure the security of this strategic object, its demilitarization and complete liberation from Russian troops.”

In addition, The United Nations has offered to help facilitate a visit by its International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors to Zaporizhzhia NPP.

The Ukrainian President also said details about his discussion with the Turkish President. This is the first time the Turkish president has visited Ukraine since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion.

“The visit of the President of Turkey to Ukraine is a powerful message of support from such a powerful country. During the meeting in Lviv, we discussed with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan the possibility of improving the grain initiative, the situation around the Zaporizhzhia NPP and the nuclear blackmail of the occupiers, and Russia’s large-scale theft of grain in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine. Issues of defense cooperation were also touched upon.”

In addition, the countries signed a memorandum of understanding on the restoration of infrastructure, which provides for the participation of the Turkish side in the post-war reconstruction of our country.
