The Times: Russia builds military base at Palmyra ruins

Russian forces have built a military camp inside the Unesco World Heritage site of Palmyra, provoking protests from archaeologists, according to The Times.
The American Schools of Oriental Research published satellite images showing the construction of a military base at the edge of the ancient site. It appeared to include a helicopter pad, two roads and accommodation blocks, The Times wrote.
The US archaeologists said that the new structures were inside the northern necropolis area of Palmyra ”close to numerous above-ground and subsurface tombs and funerary temples.”
The head of the Syrian antiquities department said that the Palmyra ruins were safer thanks to Russian military help.
