“Sweden takes over the presidency of the Council of the European Union at a time of historic challenges for the member states and for the EU in general. Russia’s illegal, unacceptable and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine is a threat to European security with dire consequences for migration, as well as for global food and energy supplies,” said the Swedish government.

Stockholm also promised to give priority attention to economic and military aid to Kyiv, and to support Ukraine on its way to the EU.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, optimistically commented on Sweden’s presidency of the EU Council.

“Sweden is assuming the Council presidency at a crucial time. Dear Swedish Prime Minister, your leadership will be crucial to preserve our European unity in support of Ukraine. You can count on me to take forward your ambitious agenda for our Union,” wrote Ursula von der Leyen.
