Spain joined the EU agreement on the purchase of ammunition for Ukraine

The Ministry of Defense of Spain informed on March 22, 2023, that Spain joined the EU initiative approved the day before to purchase one million artillery shells for Ukraine during the year.

“Defense Minister Margarita Robles signed a project agreement on Wednesday [on March 22, 2023 – ed.] for the joint acquisition of ammunition by Member States of the European Union (EU) to replenish their reserves and continue providing support to Ukraine,” said the Ministry of Defense of Spain.

Thus, Spain became the 19th country participating in the project.

“It is the first time that a mechanism for the joint purchase of weapons by the Union is used, which will allow reducing costs and avoiding risks of delays due to unexpected changes in demand,” added the Ministry of Defense of Spain.

The agreement was signed by Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden and Norway.
