Russia took at least 6,000 Ukrainian children from temporarily occupied territories to annexed Crimea

Kateryna Rashevska, a lawyer of the Regional Center for Human Rights in Ukraine noted on January 16, 2023, that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russian soldiers have taken at least six thousand children from the temporarily occupied territories of mainland Ukraine to the illegally-annexed Crimea (south of Ukraine).

“From the beginning of the full-scale invasion until the end of 2022, Crimea accepted at least six thousand children from the newly occupied Ukrainian territories for so-called “rest”. At the same time, a significant number of children were placed not even in summer camps, but in special cadet corps and military schools, militarizing them,” explained the lawyer of the Regional Center for Human Rights in Ukraine.

It is noted that the parents of these children, especially in the Kherson region, were threatened.

“Last year, additional places in schools and kindergartens “suddenly” appeared in Russian-occupied Crimea. That is, after the full-scale invasion, Russian troops were preparing to receive illegally deported children on the peninsula. Some parents still do not know exactly where their children are: somewhere in Crimea or maybe they were deported to Russia,” added Kateryna Rashevska.
