New recording emerges in Smolensk crash case

New evidence has appeared in the case of the Tu-154 crash near Smolensk in April 2010, which killed the then Polish President, Lech Kaczynski and other top leaders of the country, according to Poland`s TVP.

Chairman of the Inquiry Commission Waclaw Berczynski  has said the evidence includes recordings from air traffic control tower in Smolensk airport, reads the report.

”We have a tape. It is different from what we`ve had so far. Also, it`s different from the recordings from the towers and aircraft. There is an apparent contradiction, and this changes the category of news that we get from Russia,” said Berczynski.

He added that so far, the commission had at its disposal the recordings between the tower and the crew, while the new audio is that directly from the tower, and it is in conflict with the previous tapes.

The investigator says the recordings showed that the crew could have been misled. There is a ”significant” difference in the distance to the runway, provided to the crew. The Commission considers that this could affect the crew`s attempt to land the plane, which resulted in a crash.

The Commission will further check the audio recording. Berczynski did not rule out re-qualification of charges  after studying the material.

The Commission`s members have scheduled a press conference for Thursday, September 15, where they will elaborate on the investigation details.

As reported earlier, Polish government`s Tu-154 airplane with 96 senior officials on board crashed during the approach to landing at a military airfield in Smolensk, Russia in April 2010. The Polish delegation was planning to attend the commemoration event on the 70th anniversary of the Katyn tragedy. Among those killed were Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife.

Polish and Russian aviation experts commissions called a pilot error the main cause of the accident. Supporters of the Polish Law and Justice (PiS) party, co-founded by Lech Kaczynski, are convinced that the crash was the result of an organized attempt on the life of the Polish president.

This year Poland resumed investigation of accident.
