“The President of Ukraine expressed hope that leaders of the EU member states will firmly respond to an act of aggression against Ukraine by results of a meeting of the European Council on August 30, in particular, the military-technical assistance to Ukraine from the EU member states,” a statement reads.
The Head of State appreciated the continued support and solidarity of the European Union towards Ukraine, which is especially important in this difficult and tragic time in our history.
He also stressed the importance of close coordination and joint efforts of Ukraine and the EU in combating terrorism in Donetsk and Luhansk regions and restoration of peace in Donbas.
According to Herman Van Rompuy, recent actions of the Russian side led to further escalation of the conflict in Donbas that caused deep concern of the EU leaders and was the reason for the inclusion of the “Ukrainian issue” on the agenda of the extraordinary session of the European Council. He is convinced that by results of discussions at the highest level, the European Union will give consolidated, fair and adequate assessment of the actions of the Russian Federation.
In particular, the European Council President assured the President of Ukraine that when taking a decision by the European Council, the position of the European Union will be that of solidarity and responsibility.
