Marchuk: Donbas disengagement agreement to prevent unexpected developments

Ukrainian envoy to the Trilateral Contact Group`s security subgroup Yevhen Marchuk says that a recently concluded framework agreement on the disengagement of forces in Donbas allows the parties to the conflict to independently control their own territory and prevent unexpected developments.

The first three sections selected for the disengagement are located along the contact line in nearby areas, not in the three populated localities stipulated in the agreement, he wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.

”After seven days of the full ceasefire in these zones, not the entire front line, the parties shall withdraw their troops simultaneously, at the same time and in an inverse direction, that is opposite to each other, one kilometer from the contact line and one kilometer on the left and on the right. This is about a square, which is 2×2 km. [It must be done] with participation and constant monitoring by patrols of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission and the Joint Center for Control and Coordination,” Marchuk wrote.

”Since the one-kilometer-wide strip [along the contact line] allows the parties to independently and securely control [their] territory, including by firepower, there should be no unexpected things from the other side,” he wrote.

Marchuk added that a destroyed bridge across the Siversky Donets (Stanytsia Luhanska) and a checkpoint near the town of Zolote, which remains closed due to shelling, are located in the center of the two selected areas. Both facilities will be repaired and put into operation.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the Trilateral Contact Group signed a framework resolution in Minsk on September 21 on the disengagement of forces and equipment in Donbas. The first three points that are subject to the disengagement are the village of Stanytsia Luhanska and the towns of Petrovske and Zolote. All are in Luhansk region.
