On Friday, May 13, the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry of Japan announced the expansion of sanctions against Russia. Japanese authorities have changed the list of goods and technologies banned from exporting to Russia in connection with the war against Ukraine.

“Amid the international situation around Ukraine, our country is contributing to the international efforts for ensuring peace in the whole world, for settling this issue, as well as imposing a ban on the exports of high-tech goods (quantum computers and 3D printers) to Russia in line with the government’s decision as of May 10. These measures enter into force on May 20.”

Earlier, Japan imposed sanctions on the Russian Federation. The list of sanctions includes freezing the assets of 141 people, including Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and individuals with ties to pro-Russian groups in the east of Ukraine regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, and 70 companies of the aggressor country related to the Russian defense sector.

In addition, Japan and the European Union will step up cooperation in punishing Russia for its war in Ukraine. European Council President Charles Michel and Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida said they would continue to condemn Russia and discuss how to maximize cooperation in areas including energy, supplies of which have come under strain due to the war and sanctions against Moscow.

Japan has announced that it would follow the Group of Seven partners in stopping the use of Russian oil, and imports will be phased out over time to minimize the negative impact on people’s livelihoods and businesses. Despite Japan is heavily dependent on energy imports, including from Russia, which last year supplied about four percent of crude oil and nine percent of gas.
