German Minister-President of Bavaria calls to lift sanctions against Russia in 2017

Minister-President of Bavaria , Germany, the head of Germany’s Christian Social Union in Bavaria party, Horst Seehofer, stated that sanctions imposed against the Russian Federation by the EU and the USA for Russian illegal annexation of Crimea and Russian military actions in Ukraine had to be lifted in 2017, according to Bild am Sonntag.

Horst Seehofer is the leader of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Bavarian sister party. In his interview with Bild am Sonntag, Seehofer also called to reopen the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized countries to include the Russian Federation:

“The sanctions against Russia should be lifted as early as this year. Russia should also return to the G8 circle,” stated Minister-President of Bavaria.

“We have to be clear about different positions, such as about the annexation of Crimea, while working to promote sensible business ties,” said the head of Germany’s Christian Social Union in Bavaria party.

“We need to abandon the bloc mentality as far as a joint response to terrorism, migration and climate change is concerned. I value realpolitik above saber-rattling,” he added.

Horst Seehofer said he also favored a broader rapprochement between Russia and the West, and agreed with calls to reopen the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized countries to include Russia.

“We have to get out of the bloc thinking of the 20th century,” Seehofer told the newspaper. “We must focus on finding joint answers to terrorism, migration, climate change.”

Minister-President of Bavaria, the head of Germany’s Christian Social Union in Bavaria party, Horst Seehofer, praised the U.S.President Donald Trump for quickly implementing his campaign promises.
