“Tomorrow the European Commission will issue an opinion, and next week the European Council will decide on the European prospects (of Ukraine – ed.). All four countries support the EU candidate status for Ukraine. We hope that this decision will be unanimously adopted by the European Council,” Macron said.

This status can be developed in the context of the neighbourhood policy, Macron added, referring to Moldova.

The President of France noted that this way would take some time, as the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy knew, and that concrete steps were needed today.

“This European way is just beginning. But today we need new forms, new answers to the questions that arise on energy security, mobility security, infrastructure, and youth issues. As Ukraine is part of our common continental space, we want to create new platforms for cooperation and propose the idea of a single European community, ” Macron said.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi also confirmed his support for the candidate status for Ukraine.

“Today, the most important message of our visit is that Italy wants to see Ukraine in the European Union,” he said.
