Foreigners allowed to serve in Ukraine`s army if they sign contract

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed decree No. 248/2016 ”On the Regulation about the Military Service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine by Foreigners and Stateless Persons,” according to the president`s press service.

The decree is aimed to optimize the recruiting of foreigners and stateless persons as privates, sergeants, and officers who will serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine under a contract, the press service said.

The decree allows foreigners and stateless persons who have not served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine earlier but are now at military bases to voluntarily and duly fulfill their duty of protecting the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

However only those foreigners, who are staying in Ukraine legally can be taken for the military service in Ukrainian army, if they have such inclination. In addition, foreigners who join the Ukrainian military service will have a probatory term of two months.
