Experts forecast record high yield of peas in Ukraine in 15 years

The gross yield of peas in 2016 is forecast at 752,000 tonnes, which is almost twice the figure recorded in 2015, according to experts.

This will be a record high yield in the past 15 years, the press service of the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UAC) said.

”In 2016, the gross yield of peas is projected at 752,000 tonnes, which is almost twice the figure recorded in the previous year. The growth of the harvest of this crop is due to an increase in areas under the crop by 42% and a record high crop yield of 3.16 tonnes per hectare against 2.14 tonnes in 2015,” the UAC said.

The areas under peas were expanded at the expense of fields where winter grain crops were not sown in spring. What is more, peas became a popular crop after its prices on the domestic market had grown. The high crop yield was due to favorable weather conditions.

As of August 1, Ukrainian farmers had almost completed the peas harvesting campaign. Peas were gathered from 226,000 ha (95%), and the total yield was 714,000 tonnes.

Ukraine`s State Statistics Service reported that the gross yield of peas in Ukraine in 2015 was about 390,000 tonnes.
