European Parliament votes to create united EU army

The European Parliament has backed a resolution on strengthening centralization of the European Union, establishing a post of an EU finance minister, and creating a united European army, which was proposed by former Belgian PM Guy Verhofstadt, EU`s chief Brexit negotiator, according to BBC Russian Service.

The document was adopted with 283 votes in favor, 269 against and 83 abstained, the BBC Russian Service reports.

The move may indicate the beginning of the reform of the basic EU treaty. Essentially, Verhofstadt proposes limiting or even totally abolishing the right of the EU member states to refuse to perform collective decisions, the report says.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the leaders of Hungary and the Czech Republic supported the idea of the united European army.
