European Broadcasting Union refutes reports on sanctions against Eurovision host Ukraine

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has confirmed to Deutsche Welle the Swiss tabloid Blick has quoted Ingrid Deltenre correctly on the issue regarding Russia`s Eurovision entrant in the contest to be held in Kyiv, at the same time emphasizing that the organization cannot be responsible for other conclusions by the newspaper, in particular claiming that the EBU is already considering possible sanctions against Ukraine.

The EBU told DW they have been working hard to ensure that all 43 participants of Eurovision could perform at the contest this year.

At the same time, if one of the participants violates the rules of the contest, certain measures can be considered against the offender once the event is held, the organization said.

In an earlier report, Blick alleged that the EBU were ready to impose sanctions against Kyiv because of entry ban against Russian entrant Julia Samoilova. The authors of the article refer to the Director General of the EBU, which owns the rights to the competition.

As UNIAN reported, on March 22, the SBU barred Samoilova from entering the territory of Ukraine for a three-year period over her violation of the Ukrainian law by illegally visiting Crimea. According to media reports, in June 2015 Samoilova participated in one of the shows held on the occupied peninsula. This information has already been confirmed by the Kremlin.
