EU Trade Commissioner announces new trade preferences for Ukraine

European Commissioner in charge of EU trade policy Cecilia Malmstrom has announced additional market access preferences for Ukraine during her visit to Kyiv.

”Happy to be in Kyiv again. Working dinner with [Ukrainian Foreign Minister] Pavlo Klimkin. Glad to announce additional market access preferences for Ukraine,” she tweeted on Thursday evening.

Earlier, Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman said that Ukraine expected additional trade preferences from the European Union in September 2016.

Agriculture Minister Taras Kutoviy announced late in June that the Ukrainian side had managed to persuade European Union representatives that quotas for farm produce shipped onto the European market were not fixed and could be reviewed upwards.

The EU farm produce export quotas stipulated in the Association Agreement with Ukraine are tariff ones, covering only volumes of commodities that are exempt from export duties.

In 2015, Ukraine exported some products in excess of quotas, namely honey (four times higher than the set quota), juice (an excess by sevenfold), and maize (almost 20 times higher).
