EU now not to impose new sanctions on Russia – Hollande

The decision was made at the EU summit in Brussels on December 18 to refrain from imposing new sanctions on Russia, French President Francois Hollande has told reporters after the summit, according to Interfax.
“The decision to tighten sanctions was not taken, because the process [of a peace settlement in Ukraine] is ongoing,” he said.
However, Hollande said that the mitigation and lifting of sanctions would depend on progress in the situation in eastern Ukraine.
As reported, on December 18, the EU approved a new package of sanctions against Russia-annexed Crimea.
