Enerhoatom, Holtec signs agreement on spent nuclear fuel storage

National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine (NNEGC Enerhoatom) and the U.S. corporation Holtec International have signed the additional agreement to the contract on construction in Ukraine of a centralized storage for spent nuclear fuel from three nuclear power plants in Ukraine.
The document has been signed in Brussels on Monday by President of the Enerhoatom Yuri Nedashkovsky and president and CEO of the Holtec International Kris Singh, an Ukrinform correspondent has reported.
“The additional agreement provides that the Enerhoatom will be responsible for design and construction of the storage. The Holtec International (USA) is in charge of supply of special equipment for the dry storage of spent nuclear fuel, its transportation and related technology,” the Enerhoatom press office informs.
According to Yuri Nedashkovsky, the aim of construction of the storage is enhancing Ukraine’s energy independence from foreign energy suppliers and services. “It will also save more than USD 250 million per year for the Enerhoatom. The project is also a part of our global strategy of gradual improvement of the technological base,” Nedashkovsky said.
