Decision on Ukraine’s membership of NATO takes some time – Washington

The United States has called Ukraine’s decision to cancel its non-bloc status a “sovereign right” and has declared its support for the “open door” policy of NATO, though it also recalls the duration of the process of integration into the alliance.
U.S. State Department Press Office Director Jeff Rathke said this on Monday, commenting on the signing of the law on the cancellation of Ukraine’s non-bloc status by President Petro Poroshenko, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
“The United States along with our NATO partners will continue working with Ukraine. And it’s Ukraine’s sovereign decision what kind of a relationship it wants to pursue with NATO,” Rathke said.
However, he said, the decision to be taken by NATO and Ukraine lies in the sphere of many external issues.
According to him, the U.S. policy on the future of NATO enlargement has not changed.
“The door is open, and countries that are willing and able to contribute to the security of the Euro-Atlantic area are welcome to apply for membership,” Rathke said, adding that the application will be considered and adopted by all the members of the organization.
He also said that NATO invites countries when they are ready, and any decision by NATO on Ukraine is “a process that takes some time.”
