Council of Europe launches new action plan for Ukraine

The Council of Europe will do everything possible to contribute to the implementation of the Minsk agreements, in order to settle the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland said this at a plenary session in Strasbourg, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

“I cannot say that the Council of Europe has played a role in reaching the Minsk agreements, but I think that we can contribute, directly or intermediary, to their implementation and to continue this work together with the Ukrainian government,” Jagland said.

According to him, the Council of Europe has just launched the action plan in support of Ukraine.

“This is the greatest action plan of the Council of Europe,” he said.

He also noted that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had suggested that three members of the Constitutional Commission had to work in the Council of Europe, in order to implement the plan.

He noted also said that the Council of Europe would participate in the important process of decentralization in Ukraine: “This is a required element for all of the Minsk process.”

He added that all these efforts are needed to promote the Minsk process. “This is not the only solution, but it is important for stabilizing Ukraine, building a strong state and finding a solution to the crisis in the east of Ukraine,” Jagland said.
