Canada and the Netherlands joined the case of Ukraine against Russia at The Hague Court

Canada and the Netherlands submitted a joint application to the UN International Court of Justice in The Hague to join the case “Ukraine v. Russian Federation” regarding the violation of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide on December 7, 2022.

“Today [on December 7, 2022 – ed.], Canada and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, invoking Article 63 of the Statute of the Court, filed in the Registry of the Court a joint declaration of intervention in the case concerning Allegations of Genocide under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Ukraine v. Russian Federation),” noted the joint declaration of Canada and the Netherlands.

It is noted that Canada and the Netherlands have used Article 63 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice of the United Nations, according to which a party to an international treaty has the right to intervene in proceedings related to its interpretation.

The joint declaration noted that the Convention is of utmost importance for the prevention and punishment of genocide, and the rights and obligations enshrined in it are the responsibility of the international community as a whole.
