Barroso expects reforms from new Ukrainian parliament

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has held a telephone conversation with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, during which the latter expressed hope for the implementation of reforms and inclusive political dialogue in Ukraine, the presidential press service has reported.
“President Poroshenko thanked for a very important statement by President Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, in which the EU leaders called parliamentary elections a victory of the people of Ukraine and of democracy. Barroso said he hoped that a new coalition in the Verkhovna Rada will be pro-European and will immediately begin reforms and inclusive political dialogue in Ukraine,” the report says.
According to the report, the sides also discussed macro-financial assistance from the European Union.
“The European Commission president again stressed the EU’s readiness to transfer 760 million euros from the first and second packages of macro-financial assistance by the end of the year and consider the prospects for providing a third package, as well as continuing support for Ukraine in its dialogue with international financial institutions,” the press service reported.
Barroso also stressed the importance of financial transparency and the adoption of the law on the Accounting Chamber.
The presidents also discussed cooperation in the energy sector on the eve of the next round of tripartite talks between Ukraine, the European Union and Russia on gas supplies, which will be held in Brussels on October 29.
