Syria peace talks: Government quashes discussion on presidency; says will wait for opposition only 24 hours

The Syrian government on Saturday ruled out discussion of the presidency at peace talks due to begin on Monday, calling President Bashar al-Assad a “red line” and saying the opposition was deluded if thought it could take power in Geneva.
The Syrian government will send a delegation to Geneva to take part in UN-sponsored indirect peace talks with the opposition but has rejected the UN envoy’s call for presidential elections to be held in the next 18 months.
