KIEV — I was born in India to an American mother and Indian father and moved to the United States after high school to study at New York’s Columbia University. Having an American passport from birth, speaking English at home in Hyderabad, and visiting my grandparents in Pennsylvania over the summers, I considered myself an American — or a hyphenated one at least.
