Voting has started in rebel-held territories in eastern Ukraine where inhabitants of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions are called to elect legislators and executives in a vote that has been roundly condemned by the international community but backed by Russia.
The Ukrainian government, the United States, the European Union, other western countries, and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon say the elections are illegitimate and will not be recognized.
