Village 24 km from Ukraine`s strategic port city remains hottest spot in Donbas war

The village of Shyrokyne, located some 24 km from the Ukrainian-controlled strategic port city of Mariupol at the Sea of Azov, remains the hottest spot in the Donbas war, being shelled by Russian proxies from banned 120mm mortars, grenade launchers and large-caliber machine guns, according to the press service of the Anti-Terrorist Operation headquarters.
”The hottest spot was outside Shyrokyne. Russian occupiers used 120mm mortars, grenade launchers, large-caliber machine-guns, and small arms,” the ATO press service wrote on Facebook on Tuesday morning.
They also lobbed 82mm mortar shells into the town of Krasnohorivka and the villages of Pavlopil and Slavne.
In total, Russian-backed militants attacked ATO forces 56 times in the past 24 hours. In particular, 25 attacks were recorded in the Mariupol sector, 23 in the Donetsk sector, and eight in the Luhansk sector.
The enemy also used banned weapons in the Donetsk sector, where Ukrainian troops stationed in the town of Avdiyivka and the villages of Dacha and Mayorsk came under 120mm mortar fire. Additionally, ATO forces near Avdiyivka, the Butivka coal mine, and the village of Zaitseve were shelled by 82mm mortars, press reports said.
Further, the Russian occupiers fired anti-aircraft guns, from armed vehicles, and with small arms in the Donetsk sector.
Ukrainian forces in the Luhansk sector survived barrages from 122mm artillery systems and 120mm mortars in the village of Novo-Oleksandrivka, as well as from antitank guided weapons and grenade launchers in the town of Popasna.
As UNIAN reported earlier, eastern Ukraine saw a military escalation on Sunday, July 10, when Russian-backed militants mounted 94 attacks on Ukrainian troops along the entire contact line.
