US to continue exerting pressure on Russia – Obama

U.S. President Barack Obama has promised to continue to unite the international community to exert pressure on Russia over its aggression in Eastern Europe, as well as to support a peaceful solution to the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
He said this at a meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in the White House on Thursday, a Ukrinform correspondent reported.
“We are going to continue to seek to mobilize the international community to say to Russia that Ukraine desires to have a good relationship with all of its neighbors, both east and west,” Obama said.
He said that Russia should not dictate to Kyiv its ability to work effectively with other partners in order to better the situation for the Ukrainian people.
In addition, Obama said, the United States is going “to continue to help to mobilize the international community towards a diplomatic solution [to the conflict in Ukraine].”
Obama said that the Ukrainian authorities have strong bipartisan support in the United States and that the people of America stand with the people of Ukraine. “We wish you not only luck, but you know that you also have our strong commitment and friendship,” he said.
In addition, the U.S. leader praised the desire of the Ukrainian president to implement a peace plan and the agreements achieved in Minsk. He also welcomed the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the laws on amnesty and the special status of certain parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, recognizing at the same time that it was a difficult decision.
