President Petro Poroshenko cancelled celebration of the Defender of Motherland Day on February 23.
A relevant decree is posted on the website of the head of state.
“In order to honor the courage and heroism of the defenders of independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, military traditions and achievements of the Ukrainian people, for promoting further strengthening of the patriotic spirit in the society and to support the public initiatives to resolve to establish in Ukraine a holiday – the Day of Defender of Ukraine, which should be celebrated annually on October 14,” the document says.
Kuchma’s decree of February 23, 1999, is declared null and void.
