Ukrainians can swap passport book for passport card from Nov 1

All Ukrainians can swap their passport book for a brand-new passport card from November 1, 2016, according to Cabinet resolution No. 745.

”To introduce from November 1, 2016, the issuance (including if stolen or lost), the exchange of passport books of citizens of Ukraine, using the means of the National Demographic Registry, for contactless electronic media whose sample form is approved by this resolution,” the document says.

Earlier, passport cards were issued only to those who applied for a passport for the first time.

In addition, the Ukrainian migration service no longer accepts documents for passport books, however this type of identification documents will remain in use.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Law of Ukraine No. 1474-VIII on amendments to some legislative acts of Ukraine concerning the documents used as proof of Ukrainian citizenship and identity or special status entered into force on October 1. It is aimed at liberalizing the EU visa regime for Ukraine and provides for the transition to biometric passports.
