Ukrainian Government asks Parliament to increase defense spending, raise wages for civil servants in 2016

The Ukrainian Government proposed to increase financing of expenditure, including on defense, by UAH 7.1 billion.

The Cabinet of Ministers proposed the Verkhovna Rada to amend the State Budget for 2016 and to allocate additional funds, including for the defense and security sectors, totaling UAH 7.1 billion, according to bill No.5217 that the Government tabled in the Rada today, October 4, 2016.

”This is a balanced bill that provides for increased spending, including for the defense and security, in the amount of UAH 7.1 billion, of which cash collateral is UAH 6.3 billion,” reads a memorandum to the bill.

The Cabinet offers additional funds to be allocated for the Defense Ministry (UAH 800 million), the National Police (UAH 2 billion), the State Border Guard Service (UAH 963.5 million), the State Service for Emergency Situations (UAH 50 million), the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense (UAH 175 million) the SBU Security Service (UAH 128.5 million), the Office of the State Guard (UAH 51 million), and the State Special Transport Service (UAH 5.4 million).

The bill also proposes to increase the labor costs of civil servants, including members of local governments of all levels and staff of diplomatic missions, by UAH 1.5 billion. The funding of the investment programs of the Ministry of Regional Development is proposed to be increased by UAH 950 million.

In general, Ukraine`s defense and security budget for 2016 amounts to nearly UAH 114 billion.
