Ukrainian counterintelligence: Deputy chief of Staff of ATO suspected of espionage

Ukrainian counterintelligence is investigating into the suspected spying for Russia of thirteen individuals, with a deputy chief of Staff of the Anti-Terrorist Operation among them, according to the SBU Security Service.

The investigation also targets a lieutenant colonel in the National Guard, an official from the HR department of a military unit, and another military serviceman, according to the report.

The counterintelligence has also launched a probe into the activities of several civilians who had been used by the Russian special services as their agents, handing over classified information.

Ukrainian courts have already sentenced 20 of such people. In particular, an officer of the General Staff of the Russian Federation, a citizen of Russia, was sentenced to nine years in prison. A former officer of Ukraine`s Air Force, who had been handing over to the Russians information on flight routes of military aircraft was imprisoned for 12 years.

A former national guardsman, who had been collecting information on the instructions of the Russian special services, will do a nine-year term.
