Ukrainian banks post loss of over UAH 9 bln since start of year

Solvent Ukrainian banks posted a loss of UAH 9.184 billion since the beginning of the year, while the loss incurred by insolvent banks is estimated at UAH 168 million, according to the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

The total loss incurred by Ukraine`s banking sector in the first half of 2016 amounted to UAH 9.353 billion.

NBU said 34 banks were in the red in the first half of 2016. The maximum losses were reported by banks with state Russian capital, namely VTB Bank, Prominvestbank and Sberbank, at UAH 4.956 billion, UAH 3.047 billion and UAH 3.026 billion, respectively.

Seventy-four Ukrainian-based banks were in the black. The highest profits were reported by Raiffeisen Bank Aval at UAH 1.456 billion, Alfa-Bank at UAH 1.288 billion and Citibank at UAH 810 million.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the cumulative loss of banks operating in Ukraine, excluding insolvent banks, amounted to UAH 9.18 billion in the first half of 2016, which is 66.7% down year-on-year.

Ukraine`s banking system, excluding insolvent banks, posted a loss of UAH 66.6 billion in 2015. Some 71 banks, however, ended 2015 with profit amounting to UAH 5.2 billion.
