Ukraine`s visa liberalization not on European Parliament`s November agenda

The question of a visa waiver for Ukrainians who will travel to the European Union is not incorporated into the agenda of the forthcoming European Parliament (EP) session to be held in Strasbourg on November 21-24.

Visa liberalization for neither Ukraine nor Georgia is on the draft agenda of the forthcoming session posted on the EP website.

The consideration of the so-called suspension mechanism has not been mentioned as well, the approval of which is referred to as the main obstacle to visa liberalization for both countries.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the European Commission on April 20 proposed the European Parliament and Council of the European Union abolish visas for Ukrainian citizens. This proposal was the result of a positive evaluation by the European Commission announced in December last year, confirming that Ukraine had fulfilled all the criteria within the Visa Liberalization Action Plan.

On September 26, the European Parliament`s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) backed a report on granting Ukraine a visa-free regime and provided a mandate to start negotiations between the EU institutions.

October 23, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that the EU would make a decision on the introduction of a visa-free regime with Ukraine ahead of the EU-Ukraine Summit scheduled for November 24.
