Ukraine’s representative to EU: EU Council should initiate enhanced sanctions against Russia

Ukraine believes that the Foreign Affairs Council (made up of European Union member state ministers for foreign affairs) at the emergency meeting on Thursday will decide on preparing a package of enhanced sanctions against Russia.
This has been stated by representative of Ukraine to the EU Kostyantyn Yeliseev, an Ukrinform correspondent reports from Brussels.
“We believe that the Foreign Affairs Council at the emergency meeting will propose to the European Council, the European External Action Service, the European Commission and the Member States to prepare an ambitious package of additional significant restrictive measures against Russia,” the diplomat said.
Yeliseev noted that “it is now the time for Russia to decide whether to continue fostering international terrorism.”
Ukraine’s representative to the EU is sure that further sanctions should cover finances, energy and other sectors of the economy, as well as a review of the right to host the Football World Cup in 2018.
As reported, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini convenes an emergency meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council on Thursday, January 29, due to worsening situation in the east of Ukraine, artillery attacks by terrorists and Russian troops in Mariupol.
