Ukraine wants to stop importing gas by 2020 – Energy Ministry

Ukraine intends to switch completely to the natural gas of own production and to abandon its imports by 2020, Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Ihor Nasalyk said during the Energy Congress.
”We are going to escape from this loop. We will put an end to this, we will not import gas in 4.5 years,” the minister said.
According to Nasalyk, gas production is expected to increase by 7.5 billion cubic meters or more by 2020.
As UNIAN reported earlier, the price of natural gas Ukraine imported from the European Union in the first quarter (Q1) of 2016 was $198 per 1,000 cubic meters on the average, which was lower by 34% year-over-year.
Ukraine did not buy gas from Russia in Q1, 2016. Major gas suppliers were Poland, Hungary and Slovakia in the period under review.
In 2016, Ukraine plans to buy 11-13 bcm of natural gas from European suppliers. The country seeks to pump 8.2 bcm of gas to its underground gas storage facilities by the start of the next heating season.
