Ukraine says Moldova`s quotas on Ukrainian meat, dairy products violation of WTO rules

The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine (MEDT) considers that Moldova`s decision of April 27 on the introduction of trade restrictions in the form of quotas and duties on imports of meat and dairy products from Ukraine is a violation of the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the agreement on free trade area (FTA) within the CIS, Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Trade Representative of Ukraine Nataliya Mykolska told journalists.
”We believe this is a violation of WTO rules. We believe the introduction of such a mechanism is a violation of our agreement on FTA in the CIS. Therefore, there will be an adequate reaction from our side. It is also a violation of good-neighborly relations between the two countries, which have an association agreement with the European Union,” she said.
According to Mykolska, tomorrow, the MEDT will inform Ukrainian Prime Minister on the situation. In addition, the agency will hold an internal meeting to develop proposals for appropriate action on the part of Ukraine.
”The response will be discussed today at an inter-ministerial meeting. Tomorrow, we will inform the Prime Minister and the Cabinet of Ministers, if there is a meeting,” she said.
Mykolska said that as soon as there was a draft resolution of the Government of Moldova on the limitation of imports of Ukrainian meat and dairy products, the competent authorities of two countries held consultations on this matter and agreed on the need to finalize the draft. The Moldovan side has assured that it will not make a final decision without negotiations with Ukraine.
”There was an agreement that they will inform on the results of improvements, another consultations will take place. Any consultations have not yet been held,” Mykolska said.
